Dryer Won't Start: Quick Checks, Causes and Fixes

Loading...

Short answerMost dryers that won't start have a simple cause: the Start button wasn't held long enough, Control Lock is on, the door isn't latched, or a breaker tripped. If those check out, the usual failed parts are the thermal fuse, door switch and start switch. Work through the checks below before you buy anything.

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate ⏱ Typical time: 30–60 min Tools: screwdriver or nut driver, multimeter Last reviewed: Sep 2026

Time and difficulty are typical, estimated values.

⚠️
Safety: Unplug the dryer (or switch off both breakers on electric models) before opening any panel. On gas dryers, also close the gas supply valve before moving the unit.

Quick checks (no tools)

  1. Hold the Start button for 2–5 seconds. Whirlpool and Maytag say a quick tap may not engage the motor. Frigidaire asks for a 2-second hold.
  2. Turn off Control Lock / Child Lock. On most Whirlpool models, hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds. On Samsung, hold the two marked buttons for 3+ seconds.
  3. Check the door latch. It can look shut without being latched; some models have two latches. Look for clothing caught in the door.
  4. Check the breakers. Electric dryers use two breakers and need 240 V; if one is tripped, the drum light may work but the dryer won't run. Gas dryers use one breaker and a standard outlet.
  5. Do the drum-light test. LG and GE: open the door. If the light comes on, power is reaching the dryer.
  6. Check the cycle. On some Whirlpool models the dryer won't start if only Wrinkle Reduction is selected. Pick a Timed Dry cycle.
  7. Dry the touch panel. Wet fingers or a damp panel can stop electronic controls responding.
  8. Look for a code on the display. Samsung notes a door or vent code can block the start (see our brand code pages).

Likely causes (most to least common)

Part Symptom How to test DIY difficulty
Thermal fuse Dryer completely dead or won't start Continuity with a multimeter; no continuity = blown. It can't be reset Easy–Moderate
Door switch No click when you close the door; no response Continuity: open when released, closed when pressed Easy–Moderate
Start switch No sound at all when you press Start Continuity while holding the switch Easy–Moderate
Drive belt / belt switch Motor runs or hums but the drum doesn't turn Turn the drum by hand: if it spins very easily, the belt is broken Moderate
Blower wheel obstruction Hum, no rotation, noise Remove the belt and check the blower for a sock or lint Moderate
Drive motor Hums, drum doesn't turn, blower is clear Winding continuity Moderate–Hard
Terminal block / power cord (electric) Tripping breakers, burn marks Visual check with power off Easy–Moderate
Main control board or timer Everything else tests good Check for burn marks and voltage to the motor Hard — rarely the cause

ℹ️
Important: RepairClinic notes that a blown thermal fuse usually means the exhaust vent is restricted. Clean the full vent run before you install the new fuse, or it can blow again.

Electric vs gas dryers

  • Electric: two breakers, 240 V, 3- or 4-wire cord. On many models the thermal fuse sits on the blower housing or near the heating element.
  • Gas: one breaker, standard 120 V outlet. Plug a lamp into the outlet to test it (Samsung). The fuse is usually on the blower housing or near the burner.

Brand notes

  • Whirlpool / Maytag: hold Start 2–5 s; Control Lock off by holding Cycle Signal 3 s. Codes: see Whirlpool error codes (L2 = low voltage, F4E4 = heater gets no power).
  • Samsung: select Time Dry and hold Start. If the timer counts down but the drum doesn't turn, Samsung recommends service. Codes: dC/dE (door), 9C1 (voltage) — see Samsung error codes.
  • LG: hard reset — unplug, hold Power/Start 5 s, then Play/Pause 5 s, plug back in. Note that some outlets are switched by a wall switch. Codes: dE (door), nP (no power to heater).
  • GE: if the door light comes on, power is OK; check the door switch, start switch and thermal fuse next.
  • Frigidaire: hold Start 2 s and check the cycle knob is fully on a start position. Never replace a household fuse with a larger one.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing the thermal fuse without cleaning the vent.
  • Ordering a control board first — it's rarely the cause.
  • Assuming the dryer is dead when Start just needs a longer press or Control Lock is on.
  • Bypassing the thermal fuse or door switch to "test" the dryer. These are safety devices.

Find the right part

The model tag is usually on the rim of the door opening (Whirlpool, GE: left or right side with the door open). Samsung front-loaders: around the door or on the back. Order by the full model number: the same brand uses different fuses and switches across model years. [Where is my dryer model number?] → Model Number Locator.

When to call a pro

  • The cord, plug or outlet shows burn marks, or a breaker keeps tripping — call a licensed electrician.
  • The control board is suspected (Whirlpool recommends professional diagnosis).
  • After the basic steps the drum still won't turn (Samsung, LG route to service).
  • Your dryer is under warranty: Whirlpool's limited warranty typically lasts one year. Check coverage before DIY work.

FAQ

Why won't my dryer start when I push the button?
Most often Start wasn't held 2–5 seconds, Control Lock is on, the door isn't latched or a breaker tripped. After that, check the door switch, start switch and thermal fuse.
How do I reset my dryer?
Switch off the breaker, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on. LG adds a hard reset: unplug, hold Power/Start 5 s, then Play/Pause 5 s.
Is there a reset button on a dryer?
Most US dryers don't have one. A blown thermal fuse can't be reset — it has to be replaced.
My dryer hums but won't start. What's wrong?
A hum means the start switch works. Check for a broken belt, a jammed blower wheel or a failed drive motor.
Does a blown thermal fuse mean something else is wrong?
Usually yes: a restricted exhaust vent. Clean it before running the dryer again.
My electric dryer has power but won't run. Why?
It may be getting only half its 240 V supply because one of its two breakers tripped.
