Dishwasher Won't Drain: Causes and Step-by-Step Fixes

Loading...

Short answerA washer that won't drain is usually blocked, not broken. Manufacturers list a clogged pump filter and a kinked or badly installed drain hose as the top causes. Only after those should you suspect the drain pump or the lid switch / door lock.

Difficulty: Easy (filter, hose) to Moderate (pump) Typical time: 15 min–2 h Tools: towels, shallow pan, pliers, screwdriver, multimeter Last reviewed: Sep 2026

Time and difficulty are typical, estimated values.

⚠️
Safety: Unplug the washer before opening the filter or any panel. A front-loader can hold a lot of water, and it may be hot — put down towels and a shallow pan first.

Quick checks (no tools)

  1. Check the cycle. Delicate or Hand Wash spin slower and leave more water in the clothes (Whirlpool).
  2. Rebalance the load. One bulky item can make the washer cut the spin. GE: redistribute or add items.
  3. Use less detergent. Excess suds interfere with pumping (Frigidaire, Whirlpool). Use HE detergent only.
  4. Straighten the drain hose. Pull the washer out and make sure the hose isn't pinched against the wall.
  5. Check hose height and depth. Most brands allow up to 96" (8 ft) high; GE compact models only 5 ft. Samsung: 6–8" into the standpipe. Whirlpool front-load: no more than 4.5". Too deep causes siphoning.
  6. Don't seal the hose with tape. There must be an air gap at the standpipe (Whirlpool, Samsung).
  7. Test the house drain. Pour water into the standpipe. If it backs up, call a plumber (GE).
  8. Close the lid / door and wait — GE says pauses of up to 3 minutes are normal. Don't advance the dial, or the washer may skip pump-out.

Likely causes

Part Symptom How to test DIY difficulty
Drain pump filter / coin trap (front-load) Slow drain, OE / F9E1 / 5C code Open the filter at the lower front, clean it Easy
Drain hose No or slow drain, often after moving the washer Straighten; clean with a long, thin brush Easy
Drain pump Hum or silence during drain; water stays Impeller should turn freely; check for power at the pump Moderate
Lid switch (top-load) / door lock (front-load) Washer won't advance to drain or spin Continuity test; check for debris Easy–Moderate
Door-seal drain holes (Whirlpool front-load) Water left in the gasket Clean the small holes inside the seal Easy
Pump belt (older belt-drive top-loaders) Motor runs, no pumping Look for glazing or wear; check tension Moderate
Timer / main control board Pump gets no voltage during drain Voltage check (pro) Hard

Top-load vs front-load

  • Front-load: filter behind a small panel at the lower front (LG: bottom-left; some Whirlpool models behind the bottom of the dispenser drawer). Drain the small tube first, then turn the filter counter-clockwise.
  • Top-load: usually no user filter (Samsung, Whirlpool). Check the hose and lid switch; manual draining often needs a pro (Maytag).

Brand notes and codes

  • Whirlpool / Maytag: F9E1 = long drain time (see Whirlpool error codes). Maytag hose height 39"–96". Don't change the factory hose shape on Whirlpool top-loaders.
  • LG: OE = unable to drain (see LG error codes). Top-loaders show it after 13 minutes. Clean the filter, run Spin Only, then Tub Clean; request service only if OE returns.
  • Samsung: nd / 5E / 5C = no drain (see Samsung error codes). Pump filter on front-loaders only; Samsung advises cleaning it every month or 40 washes.
  • GE: max pump height 8 ft (full size), 5 ft (compact). Some models have a front-access filter door.
  • Frigidaire: standpipe at least 1¼" wide and no more than 96" high. E2 (top-load) / E21 (front-load) = long drain — see Frigidaire error codes.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing the hose too deep into the standpipe or taping it airtight.
  • Buying a pump before cleaning the filter and hose.
  • Using too much detergent.
  • Advancing the dial during a normal pause.
  • Blaming the washer when the house drain is clogged.
  • Opening the filter without a pan and towels.

Find the right part

Tag location: Whirlpool front-load — rim of the door opening; top-load — under the lid on the tub rim. GE top-load — under the lid near the right hinge or on the back of the control panel. Drain pumps differ between direct-drive, belt-drive and front-load designs, so always order by the full model number. → Model Number Locator.

When to call a pro

  • The code returns after cleaning the filter and hose, or the pump makes no sound (LG).
  • Your top-loader has no accessible filter or manual drain.
  • Troubleshooting doesn't fix it (Whirlpool, LG schedule service).
  • Whirlpool washer parts are covered for one year from delivery; check warranty before DIY.

FAQ

Why is my washer full of water and not draining?
Most often a clogged pump filter (front-load), a kinked or clogged hose, or a hose pushed too deep into the standpipe. Less often a failed pump or lid switch.
Where is the drain filter on my washer?
On most front-loaders, behind a small panel at the lower front. Many top-loaders don't have one.
How do I manually drain a front-load washer?
Unplug it, put a shallow pan under the filter, and slowly open the drain tube or filter. Then clean out the debris.
How high can a washer drain hose be?
Usually up to 96" (8 ft). Minimums vary: Maytag 39", Samsung 18". GE compact models reach only 5 ft.
Can too much detergent stop a washer from draining?
Yes. Frigidaire and Whirlpool both list excess suds as a cause.
What does F9E1 or OE mean?
Whirlpool F9E1 = long drain time. LG OE = unable to drain.
