Microwave problems are usually one of three things: it runs but doesn't heat, the turntable doesn't turn, or it won't start at all. We stock the parts behind each of these — magnetrons, high-voltage diodes and capacitors, turntable motors, door switches, and control boards — for both countertop and over-the-range models.
Heating vs. Mechanical Failures
If the microwave runs, the light comes on, and the turntable spins, but nothing gets hot, the magnetron or the high-voltage diode is almost always the cause — these are the two parts responsible for actually generating heat, and everything else in the unit can work perfectly while these fail. If the unit won't start at all, or stops immediately after starting, check the door switches first; most microwaves have two or three interlock switches, and a single failed switch is enough to stop the unit from running as a safety measure.
A Note on Working Inside a Microwave
Microwaves store high-voltage electrical charge in the capacitor even after being unplugged, which makes internal repairs more dangerous than most other appliance work. If you're not confident discharging a capacitor safely, the magnetron and high-voltage components are worth having a technician install even if you're comfortable with other appliance repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Why did my microwave suddenly stop and show a "door" or "open door" message even though the door is closed?
- A: This points to a door switch or latch assembly that isn't registering as fully closed — often from a worn latch rather than an electrical fault, so check the physical latch alignment before replacing the switch.
- Q: Is it worth replacing a magnetron, or should I replace the whole microwave?
- A: On mid-range and higher-end models, a magnetron replacement is usually well worth it. On very low-cost countertop units, compare the part price plus labor against the cost of a new unit before deciding.
